The Scooter Store: Good or Bad?

The Scooter Store is the number one provider of mobility products in America, with several dozen stores in over half of the states in the country. The Scooter Store will discuss the mobility needs that you have with your doctor and find ways that you can take advantage of Medicare and health insurance benefits to pay for the scooter or electric wheelchair (or other mobility accessory) that you want to get. The Scooter Store helps you stay mobile and go where you want to go when you want to go there. Since 1991, The SCOOTER Store has helped provide freedom and independence to more than 300,000 people with limited mobility.

The Scooter Store is the country's largest provider of power wheelchairs and scooters. The Scooter Store was reimbursed by Medicare for more than 44,000 power chairs and scooters last year. The Scooter Store has delivered $40 million in wheelchairs to customers that Medicaid has not reimbursed the company for, and last week the U.

A Mobility Consultation is a free, over the phone, no obligation, no pressure conversation with one of The SCOOTER Store mobility experts. Founded in 1991 and headquartered in New Braunfels, Texas, The SCOOTER Store has locations and a network of service specialists across America.

Based on a core ideology, "Always Do the Right Thing," The SCOOTER Store has grown from a vision into a highly successful national enterprise with over 1,000 employees. Instead of the ?zippy? power scooters that were advertised, The SCOOTER Store sold the beneficiaries expensive power wheelchairs that they did not want, need, and/or could not use. Many beneficiaries had no idea what kind of equipment they were getting, until it was delivered by The SCOOTER Store. The government?s lawsuit also alleged that The SCOOTER Store knowingly sold used power mobility equipment to beneficiaries and billed Medicare as if the equipment were new, in violation of Medicare regulations. New rules for power mobility implemented last year by the Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are designed in part to prevent the abuses that resulted in the government?s lawsuit against The SCOOTER Store.

In addition, The SCOOTER Store will operate for the next five years under a Corporate Integrity Agreement with the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Health and Human Services that is designed to help ensure future compliance by the company with Medicare regulations. If you pre-qualify, the mobility experts at The SCOOTER Store could help you regain your mobility with a scooter or power chair at little to no cost. The mobility experts at The SCOOTER Store work with Medicare and private insurance companies every day.

Over85,000 physicians have worked with The SCOOTER Store to prescribe just the right mobility equipment like a motorized wheelchair or an electric wheelchair for their patients. The SCOOTER Store offers a full line of durable medical equipment, including power wheelchairs and scooters, lifts, ramps and accessories in 47 states. Under existing guidelines, Medicare will only pay for durable medical equipment that's primarily used in the home. "Although they clearly understand that the time for arguing about [the cost-effectiveness of home care] is done, they are fighting tooth and nail on the other hand to say we don't want to provide mobility equipment that will allow you to be mobile in the community, much less in the home," said Harrison.

Medicare has provided coverage for such devices since 1996 to people requiring this equipment to accomplish activities of daily living inside their home. At issue was the importance of the Certificate of Medical Necessity (CMN), a document mandated by Congress for physicians to complete that affirms the medical need for power mobility equipment. Medicare data shows that among beneficiaries with similar disabilities, those who received power mobility equipment generated less cost to the system overall than those who did not receive such assistance, even after paying the cost of the power wheelchair.
